I would try & change the date to a time when your son is on uni breaks but usually you have to pay the difference in ticket price & a fee so can get expensive from a promo ticket.
I have been given a credit to re book within 12 mths from one airline & taxes back from another airline neither of them AA.
Ring AA very early morn try to get through to sort it out.
Good luck to your son, my daughter is also sitting uni exams over the next 2 weeks & we are off to Bali in July
