Have a look around the frame yourself and see if anything looks a bit strange (holes where they shouldn't be etc). Quite honestly - also ask the people selling it to you if it is OK to get back to Australia - a reputable shop will tell you the truth. I have just done this back to Brisbane. I knew the frame on the artwork I had bought was a bit cheap and nasty - but they were only going to take 50000rp off the price for me to take the painting without frame. And I know the cost to get a frame back here would be huge. Thought it was worth the risk to bring it back as one. I discussed it with customs, the guys said - great painting, the frame is a bit ordinary though (in terms of the wood used). However, it was clear of borers, so all OK.
