I imagine that the reason you were asked to pay was that THEY DID NOT GET THE FULL PRICE deposited in their bank which again I presume was not their fault but more to do with your bank.
We had this happen to us 3 times in one day quite a few years ago when we ordered and paid for goods overseas by transfer,Yes you go to your bank and they charge you the full rate according to their exchange rate plus whatever their fees are to do this,BUT WHAT THEY DONT TELL YOU is that your bank doesnt have a relationship with the bank you are sending it too so it goes through a 3rd party bank which of course grabs more fees out of the money being transfered and just sends on the balance.
We got hit about US$25 per each transfer (to diff banks and diff countries) and when fronting our bank we found that 2 of them went via chase manhatton bank in America(money sent from Aus to Hong Kong and Malaysia) so spent a couple od hours chasing around all the various banks to see which had "relationships" with what banks so I could do further transactions through them without the rip off of extra unstated fees of an itermediatory bank.
Our bank of course claimed they didnt know what the extra bank would charge but they were still told that they should have informed us at least or preferably found out the fees and incorporporated in our charges but banks being banks they didnt want to know.
