Do you ride at all at home?
if yes then its not a problem but still best to get your home license then international permit for Travel insurance purposes!
If you dont ride on the road at home (scooter on car license etc)then Bali is not a safe option to start!
Personally i wouldn't ride without a license and international permit but plenty do!
Lots of people ride scooters in Bali with no license at all but would never do it at home??
It can get a bit hairy on the roads with the traffic even for the experienced rider, couple this with the amount of alcohol that gets consumed on holiday at odd hours as apposed to at home it makes it worse!
I haven't seen many accidents in Bali involving tourists but have seen loads in Thailand over the years and it can result in costing lots of money because of the lack of insurance.
Remember the signs in the back windows of cars "Think Bike" well there isn't many in Bali because they all grew up with more bikes than cars! Bali drivers are aware of bikes as second nature but some riders are not aware of the other drivers seemingly dangerous road maneuvers causing them to over react to the situation!
If you like to ride get a license! its just as much fun at home as it is on holiday!
Sorry didn't mean to lecture but Traffic is increasing all the time and getting more and more dangerous for 'experienced' bike riders!
