Your post is no different to a lot of British migrants that arrive in Australia only to find it's not what they were used to (Generally it's the social scene that we missed and drove some back home) They miss their family, friends, food and their normal lifestyle and return home for that reason.
As a Pom I can relate to how I felt when I arrived, however, we went to a migrant hostel and mixed with a lot of other Poms in the same 'boat' as us (and still some 38 years later are still friends today) Given that we all spoke the same language (well most of us as the Southerners were a bit strange LoL) it must have been very easy for us to settle... unlike your friend's friend with a totally different culture and language.
It sounds like your friend's friend made the best of his experience in Australia and it's wonderful to read they are still friends today.
BTW I still hang out for pork pies, Lancashire hot pot, fish chips and mushy peas etc. You can take a girl out the country but you can't take the country out the girl... :-)
