1st Time Bali, Area? Hotel? Costs?

I am heading to Bali at the end of April for the first time with my wife for my Birthday for a week.

We are a couple in our 30s and want to see lots of sights, eat and drink well, enjoy nightlife and relax, the preference is in that order:)

Anyone got a decent hotel that costs about AUD$100 a night which is close enough to everything but you can also get away from any craziness in Kuta.

We have been looking at Legian and Seminyak, any thoughts?

Also would a 3-4 days around Legian and then onto Ubud for a couple of days be ok or would that be cutting things a bit tight?

SWith regards to costs, how much would you pay for a standard beer in Legian and a meal for 2?
