The majority of room safes are just that! safe.

A part of the problem must lay with the person using it also!

Opportunistic staff may be a problem anywhere you stay.

Still i always put a small strip Gaffa tape on the cupboard door and also across the safe.

I will know if it has been disturbed the moment i return to the room but untrustworthy staff will also know that i am aware or the tape wouldn't be there!

I have never had money stolen but if I did I would call the police and bypass the hotel.

Most travel insurance covers lost or stolen cash so with a police report you have a claim against your insurance!

Its no good just reporting it to management.

The other problem is there are a lot of opportunistic traveler out there too so hotel management cant just say sorry and give alleged stolen money back or this would be an omission that they know their staff were thieves!

I would say that most times people have lost or mislaid their money elsewhere and a room safe break in is the simple explanation!
