after 14 trips to Bali i finally decided i was ready!!
previously we used a motorscooter.
i wouldn't reccommend it to ANYONE (self driving) unless they have travelled to Bali numerous times and have an understanding of the road rules and knowledge of the roads in the area you are staying (knowing where the one way roads are).
I would also suggest a GPS.
This way it makes it an enjoyable experience.

Our first outing was from Legian to Uluwatu as my partner had never been, the next morning we headed for Candi Dasa and back through Ubud and Sukuwati, all without incident, even when the GPS went flat as we left Ubud lol.

We had $3000 excess cover on our travel insurance, and a US$300 excess on the car we hired, all was arranged through our hotel, and we paid rp175 000 per day (we only hired for 3 days).

Hope this helps you make your decision
