You get the 60 day visa before you leave.
No Indonesian sponsor required.
You can then extend after the initial 60 days in Bali for up to 6 months (as per the social re per month, cost, photos ID, appearing in person etc).
To extend you do need a sponsor & many living there go through an agent to facilitate this.

The Social visa can be obtained before you leave but requires a sponsor before you leave as your reason is family visit etc as opposed to tourism (as does a business visa etc)

In about 2006 the visas changed and the tourist visa became listed under Visitor Single Entry Visa
This includes:
a. Government (Diplomatic Visa / Service Visa)
b. Business Visa
c. Social-Cultural Visa
d. Tourist Visa

Both the tourist & social now both have the same code B 211

I have family living there & no they do not leave after 2 months.
They extend on the tourist visa & have done for 2 years or so.

They leave after 6 months as you would for a social visa.
