Jetstar check-in info please

Usually fly Garuda... so a few dumb questions.
Flying Jetstar from Melb on 20 October using frequent flyer points.
How early can I request seating preference and do I go through jetstar or qantas site.
...and do they usually weigh hand luggage on return flight.
Any info would be much appreciated.
