There is certainly an obligation for airlines to ensure that any volatile liquid is being safely carried, and there is always the chance that a bottle top has not been properly put on, and leakage could occur in flight.
I see nothing wrong in security guys ensuring that the bottle / bottles are properly sealed if carried in this way.
It may assist in such cases if the bottle has some sort of secondary seal, such as glad wrap or similar, or even a sealed plastic bag.
It certainly gives you a sound argument to present if you can demonstrate that you have taken additional precautions.
