We booked our own flights this year for the first time & I was champing at the bit to get them booked but my husband insisted we wait (like you, I just needed to have everything all confirmed because it was driving me nuts). We saved $1000 on airfares for 4 ppl by waiting 2 weeks as the cheap Air Asia fares came out & then Pacific Blue followed suit.

I was ready to book again for Christmas as soon as we returned in August as I was sure there wouldn't be any cheap fares for that time but again hubby said wait. Hard to believe, but he was right again!
We got fares with Garuda during their anniversary sale & saved around $500 for 3 ppl.

Although I understand where you're coming from with feeling the need to book immediately, I think waiting may work in your favour. As adqa has suggested, maybe look at booking flights from Perth to Denpasar & try for some cheap flights from Sydney to Perth. A bit of mucking around but you could save some serious $$ which would go a long way in Bali :o)
