who know the market far better than visitors ever will so are highly unlikely too be beaten in any negotiations. Often the price will depend not so much as to how far you are going but where you will be stopping and what doing. Your driver/guide will get a commission from purchases you make of up to 70% of price you pay, will get commission on any entrance fees, and will get a free meal at any tourist restaurant he tskes you to as well as commission on what you pay for your meal.
It makes me laugh to see people being so paternalistic about drivers who work their customers on a daily basis.
