The public ferry to Lombok is sheer luxury compared to the three days I did once on a Haj ship from Jakarta to Padang.

Three days in a cargo hold above the engine room with 3,000 passengers sailing along the equator. The double bunks were made from sheet steel and arranged six inches apart over the floor of the cargo hold. The water to flush the toilets was turned on twice a day for fifteen minutes.

There were lifeboats for 400 passengers and the food was rice and dried fish, if you brought along your own plate.

The public ferry to Lombok is sheer luxury in comparison.
