yes we went 3 times last and even since early Dec prices have gone up considerably almost everywhere.
August /sept is also a higher season for accomm so sometimes more expensive again. Just 2 weeks ago went through same scenario deciding where to stay. Booked the Patra (but too exp for 3 weeks) and then decided on The Kumala Pantai. The travel agents sell it through Garuda- Bali on any Budget BUT for the Presidential Suite which is what we booked it was $1,200 cheaper to book with the hotel direct for the 10 nights. We have also booked a smaller room think its about 550,000rp a night direct inc b/fast.If you wanted something bigger they have a Junior Suite. I emailed them - usually take 24-48 hrs to reply then ended up ringing reservations direct and organised it all. I dont normally stay down this end but sounds like location is ok- close to beach and restaurants good size pools etc.
I looked on the net first to see if rooms were avail on the hotels websites ie Bali Garden, Dynasty etc but a lot for Sept were already booked. Even if you go through travel agent you have to wait as the rooms are on request.
Not sure what the cheapest flights are from Melb but best deals from Adel were Virgin.
Also considered the Melati apartments which look nice but as well have kids needed a bit more action around.
All seasons Legian also had reasonable prices esp if you have an advantage plus card.
