the bottom line is that some strains of malaria are resistant to all the drugs. This is more prevalent in some countries than others. Some meds cause problems with sun exposure, Larium can induce psychotic episodes. Some ill advised for diving. Do consult a doctor, but my experience has been that very few really know enough to give an expert opinion, though they usually give one anyway.
Do some diligent internet research to help clarify things regarding your own situation. That said, I do not thing Bali is high risk, but don't believe me simply because I say it.
The only true preventative is to avoid mozzies at all costs, at least the females [my approach]. They're the only ones that go for the blood. Females are kind of like that. :)
