We did this back in July when we hired a car. We were armed with good map, but that didn't help much around Ubud, it is very confusing with so many roads heading in all directions - but not impossible. We did make one wrong turn, went wrong way up a one way street at Sukawati Markets and reversed into a Polici Station (very funny), we were going to Sanur. What did help was a local friend on his motor bike showed us the way out of Ubud. Ubud was extremely busy when we were there. Every one was in town for holidays and a major celebration. As Madness says you can ask for assistance if you get lost. Good luck.
