to buy land in Bali. Foreigners can't own land in their own name. I'm guessing you know this if you are considering buying.
I personally know a few people who have lost between $30,000-$200,000.
You have to know the person you are puting the land in really well. You are trusting that person with a lot of money.
There are some expats that promise (with their Balinese partner) to help you. People have lost money doing this.
It can be done, but it's not a matter of turning up with your money and buying it, and you do what you want.
I also know people with Balinese husbands and even they have difficulty. As soon as someone knows a Bule is buying the price of everything goes up.
We looked into buying a small hotel a few years ago to retire in Bali but decided it was better to work here then go for holidays. It worked out (for us) we'd be better off working here for 9 months then going to Bali for 3 months (but not having to work there).
Others have made very successful businesses. But I know some work very long hours (that's not my idea of retirement).

Make sure you do you homework.
Good luck.
