Its probably safer now than its ever been, all you have to do is be aware and watchful without being paranoid as stated in newgirl's post.
If the Aussie government isn't sufficiently concerned to upgrade the travel warning to "Don't go", and they are probably in the best position to make the call, not journalists and television reporters, then the risk is not considered by the government to be any greater than it has been since the original warning was issued post 02 and has remained almost unchanged for the past six years.
After its all said and done only you can make the call and no matter how may posts you read, none of us (as far as I am aware) are fortune tellers, so you have to decide if YOU feel it is safe to travel based on the hard facts and not on the opinions of others.
