I asked the same question about hiring a scooter in December. I even stated that I was an experienced licensed rider and an adult but most of the replies were from inexperienced riders giving me advice about licenses and insurance. Information I didn't need or ask for. but that's what happens here a lot on this forum with certain persistent posters THAT KNOW WHO THEY ARE but can't resist on replying to a post with unnecessary unwanted information...

Sorry about that...it's a chestnut of mine.

Motor scooter hirers are everywhere o the streets operating in little offices, shops, kiosks, large offices and sometime restaurants.

There are two types of (mopeds) scooters available. One with a clutch or automatic. The automatic is generally newer and will cost more but they are much easier to ride.

Two helmets are usually supplied but they might be a little dodgy. You can buy a new one from several places from about Rp80,000. None of the helmets I saw will prevent damage to your head in an accident. They are just made of plastic material but what do you expect for that price. A good helmet should cost about RP2Million but I don't think they are available or for hire.

Price for an automatic for just a few days starts about Rp40,000 if you bargain.
Cheaper ones are usually non automatics. If you hire for a week it could be cheaper.
There are some many places to hire from so just keep looking until you get something you like.

As for insurance for the bike when you are there. Ask for it, look for a document that says you have it but don't expect you'll get it. Every where I tried I was told ‘hati hati saja' when I asked for insurance which means ‘just be careful'

Good luck with it.
