I thought from the OP post that he was looking for a board for his son? He maybe didn't know what to look for in a rental board? The scam exists. Son and mates do rent on the beach but they can easily tell a repaired board. Some have even bought boards from the beach but have also assisted people who really don't know and have seen the scam in action. I told the OP to ask surfers.
I see the advice as exactly the same as warning about money changing.
