This is not always the case and is not fair to some of the rental places on the beach to make such an definite statement. I know for a fact as I bought two boards in Bali three months ago and left them with a friend for his business and paid 4.5 million and 5.5 million respectively. One was imported from Hawaii and one local custom made. Both in excellent condition and good boards. He had excellent reports from a pro surfer who took them out for half a day.
These guys are doing it tough enough on the beach with some lousy tourists wanting to rent for 30,000 a day which is the price of a cafe latte. Have a heart, also some of the surf shops rent out boards which I would not put in a pond!
