In my experience, the real indo foods at stalls is usually quite average. You really have to get a good tip to find some good indo food... but even then, it's usually not a diverse range of tastes in the one meal unless it's masakan padang.
I think in Bali the warungs on jalan 66 are very good and very reliable. Most westerners are going to be very comfortable there and the prices are good.
The more down and dirty you get, the cheaper it gets... but the likelihood of eating something bad definitely increases! The mere fact that when eating masakan padang the food has already been placed in front of someone else to taste increases the chance of catching some sort of bug.
I'd love to hear some more recommendations, though.
