This comes from a friend of mine who took them back to the US.
You can buy them at the markets or supermarkets.
They come in 200g sealed blocks (brand name karangsari) and are colour coded for how spicy they are - Hot (pedas) has a green label, Sedang (medium) red and tidak pedas (not spicy) dark blue.
Cut the blocks into thinner pieces and heat in a frying pan, breaking up and squashing them with a wooden spoon while adding water until it's the thickness that you want or use the pan juice that's left after frying chicken in oil and lime juice for example.
