dirt, kotor is the word for dirty so it shouldn't be mistaken. My first trip, I thought I spoke pretty good Indonesian, as I'd been learning at Uni for 2 years. I asked for the "wartel" warung telekomunikasi, telephone exchange, to ring home, and got some very strange looks. I was gesturing and eventually they worked out what I wanted. There is a very subtle difference between wartel (which is what I meant to say) and wortel - the word for carrot. I'm sure the locals thought I was decidedly odd. Nevertheless, everyone will love the fact that you are making an effort to speak some Indonesian with them. Have a great holiday
