'sayang' pronounced 'say young' means 'love' or 'darling'.
'silakan' is used when inviting someone to do something, as in "please sit down" or "please eat".
your children would use 'minta' to ask for an ice-cream. eg. "minta es krim", or simply use 'terima kasih' (thankyou). eg. eskrim itu, terima kasih (that ice-cream, please), while pointing.
