I've personally allways been reluctant to use my card, as I've had too many hassles over the years with dodgy cards.
Some people use a combination of things. Personally we've just taken cash, on a money belt. Any reputable hotel/resort will have safes (best if inroom) for you to use.
Another handy thing to do is to buy some rupiahs at the currency exchange before you leave Aust. It will not give you as good a rate of exchange, but what it will do will be to let you have a good change of familiarizing yourself with the money. It's surprising what a difference that makes.
I'm going to India in December, and intend to do just that. Honestly, don't stress too much, it's far easier than it sounds.
