Yes I think you are right, that some children may never recieve personal gifts from their sponsors, as, as you say funding the education is a wonderful gift in itself.
I have visited our sponosred children many times and always take them special bags with treats, clothes, pens, pencils, books, toys, toothbrushes, toothpaste, plus plus plus, have visited one home with rice, coffee, sugar etc, and sometimes take gifts for the teachers and lots of the other children.
I suppose it is more about life skills, we cant all get the same all the time. Some of us win, some of us miss out this time, and some of us miss out most or all of the time. Damn shame, but thats life.
When I think about it I then think, then why shouldnt the children that I have special feelings towards not benefit from my keeness to provide over and above the education costs.
I suppose, no right or wrong answer. Just the way it is.
