I've visited our sponsored child with others who have sponsored children at the same school and you are spot on with the envy (more than jealousy) and have nots comment. Some people just go crazy with presents.
Keep it simple but personal. A cap and t-shirt with Australia on them always pleases our kid plus some stationery things for school like colour pencils etc.
For the school, we've taken things to help the teachers educate the students like wall maps, calendars and simple picture books.
Our daughters' orthodontist has in the past given us toothbrushes and toothpaste for all the children at the school. You'd be surprised what you can get once you tell people what you do.
