I know everyone is concerned for the people of Bali, as am I. Many of us avoid shopping with the beach vendors, it can be fun, but it can also be very frustrating but these are the people that are really suffering. They are even having a difficult time eating.
So many of us that have been to Bali many times, have friends at the beach, and many of us avoid other beach vendors or all beach vendors, and of course the posts don't promote shopping with them...so I just want you to know that these are some of the people that are really struggling.
Beach vendors have to pay for their beach sellers licence every 3 months, also they have to pay of their village ID quite often as well, and of course they pay for their kost/room, food....etc. If they don't have thes ID/licenses they can't work, and if they can't work, they can't eat or pay their expenses....and many of them are not making enough to survive on. Even if they were to get 5,000, 10,000 rp a day they could eat and drink water...and hopefully a little left to pay their rent...this is really true. I have a really good friend at Legian Beach, he did great prior to the bombings in 2002, but has never recovered since, and now is worse than ever.....except there has been an influx of people during the holidays, so currently many of them are eating.
This is really a serious situation................I'm certain it is difficult for many people in Indonesia, but this is something we all can help with............just shop a little...even if it's only with one vendor a day....or a couple of times during your holiday.......you will help someone eat that day..The nice thing is, the vendors share with each other, and many of the warungs will let them have credit to eat, and then as soon as they make some money, (even if it's very little) they pay towards their bill, so they can continue to eat.........but if they go too long with out selling anything, then they risk even being able to eat.
I just thought I would pass this on, as so many people are unaware of how difficult it is.....and for a few dollars would be willing to shop and have some fun, with some of the most interesting, knowledgeable, spounge like (a stong will to learn from the tourist) people in Bali..they aren't asking for a hand out..they're really trying to earn a living.
Selamat Tahun Baru!!!
