When I went to Borneo I didn't stay at KK. I went to Sandakan and up the river to a jungle lodge. Then we went to Kuching and up a different river to stay in a longhouse. After that my friend went back to work in Singapore and I stayed on for a week by myself in Kuching. Nobody talked to me! That wouldn't happen in Bali.
I found the food great, because my travelling companion was Chinese and most of the businesses were Chinese, so she'd have long conversations in Mandarin about our food. I'd been hoping I could used Bahasa Indonesia to communicate, but everyone I came across spoke Chinese or English.
Borneo is a very interesting place, but I still love Bali best.
