I have had no problems using my oz EFTPOS card at ATM's in Bali.It has a Cirrus sticker on the card and they are accepted everywhere in BAli.The conversion rate is based on the bank's rate of the day. Usually the maximum amount of money you can take out of an ATM at one time is Rp. 1.5 million or 2 million but then put your card straight back in and get more out until you have reached your bank's daily limit.Just check with your son's bank about the fees they charge per transaction cause some bank's charge a hefty sum.
Also tell your son to be careful as some machines in Bali disperse your money and receipt first and your card stays in the machine and it asks if you want another transaction. So many people have lost their cards this way as in oz we are so used to getting our card first.
