Yes you are right - I use a National Bank Gold Card and the excess is $NZ75 for medical claims and $NZ250 for other claims. While this might be higher than some of the policies that you have to pay for you do need to add the cost of the policy to the excess to get the true amount you would end up spending. Since I've saved so much over my last couple of trips even if I end up spending $NZ250 I'll still be in the black! Personally since Im reasonably young & healthy I only take out travel insurance to protect me from the 'major'stuff
