1cover but paid up front by Visa so I can see your case was different.
What we do as a safety net is keep a Visa card that we never use as a "spare", obviously you need to choose one with no annual fees if you hope never to use it. We get the highest limit they are offering us, which is in our case $10,000 I think, and never travel without it. It doesn't leave the hotel safety box so there is no danger that a sudden urge to buy a container full of furniture etc can come between us and our good intentions. We have another card, well actually one each which we use in the normal way. I also always make a point of carrying the 3 cards in different bags, pockets etc. during flight and transit. This puts my mind at rest that whatever fate throws at us we should have a plan B. It's second nature now because we have done it for so long so, although it sounds fussy, we no longer even think about it.
