My wife is Indonesian and always leaves a spoonfull or so, she says(like a representation) that it is for our future children, but it doesn't matter even when we have kids she will still do it? I think it's more of a unselfish gesture that even though the food is on her plate, it is also there for our loved ones if needed.
It's funny how us bule often refer to indonesian people as Indo's as the word Indo's from an Indonesian perspective is actually used to describe the offspring from the relationship of a western with Indonesian.
