This is often caused by the same fungus organism which causes tinea [athletes foot], or ringworm on other parts of the body. It is very infectious.

The best treatment I have found for tinea, and probably the cheapest, is Whitfield's Ointment. Years ago, chemists used to mix this up themselves, so it's probably a quite simple remedy. These days, you would probably get a proprietary brand. Certainly worth a try.

People who get this kind of problem are often also prone to candida [thrush].

If the nail rot does not respond to Whitfield's, there are other remedies, including oral fungicidal agents, but you need to see a doctor for these, preferably of course, one who understands such conditions.
