Amed is that last beautiful place left in Bali, and everyone we have taken there from the Land of flightless birds absolutely loved the place. In my book the Coral View restaurant is overpriced, indifferent food. There are half a dozen restaurants in the Lipah area serving better food all within 5 mins walk of Coral View.
The great thing about the place is the country feel of the place, the almost deserted beaches and great snorkeling. Children love it as do younger adults, but they get bored with the lack of nightlife after a few days. It is the Bali I remember from my first visit in 1977 - things start early and finish early.
If you want to get back to nature a bit it's the place! Get up at 6am and go for a walk, to watch the sunrise and the fisherman returning - there's sails like Auckland or Sydney harbours on a Sunday afternoon. Read, relax, swim, eat and go to bed early.
There are some great walks in the mountains too and you see a side of Bali hardly any tourists bother with - their loss.
But I must admit it helps a lot to have your own transport as there are so many things to see and do there.
