You can get sim cards at shops called Wartels.
But what I did was I went to the cafe accross the road from my hotel and saw the staff there as I have got to know them over the last couple of years.
I gave him the money and he went down the road and got it for me at locals prices Rp 15,000 instead of tourist prices of Rp 30,000 to 45,000. I then gave him more money to top up the account, which he did for me. I never had to get out of my chair or even put down my bintang. Hows that for service eh !!!!
He also put his sim card in my phone first to make sure it wasnt networked locked.
The easy way for you to check yours is to use the simcard of a friend of yours here who is signed up with a different carrier to the one you use. If you get reception then your phone is not network locked and it should work over there.
Do not take a CDMA phone as they arnt really setup with the CDMA network over there. Just use a normal digital phone and she'll be apples.
I hope this is as clear as mud for you.
Cheers PD
