It depends if your phone stores the numbers in the phone memory or on the sim card. I found that half of mine were there when I changed to my new Bali sim and half were missing. Not sure why my phone saved half to the phone and half to the sim.
I had assumed none of them would be saved when I changed cards though, and had written down the numbers of the people I'd want to SMS. Then it was just a matter of re-entering those missing numbers into my phone. Only took a couple of minutes.
CDMA phones are more often used in regional areas, rather than cities. It's a different network to the standard digital one (which is much more common). Not sure how you'd tell. I guess ask your phone service provider, they'd know what service they're giving you.
I got my sim card outside the supermarket at Matahari Kuta Square. Cost me Rp140,000 (including a top up of extra credit) and I had Rp135,000 credit on my phone. It cost me Rp600 each time I sent an SMS home and I think Rp300 for every local one I sent. Was easy enough, I just handed over the phone and the girl had the new card in the phone, topped up and working in under 5 minutes.
