I think all of the other responses have summed it up for you. Just go with realistic expectations and you'll have a wonderful time. This is an under-developed, poverty-stricken country you're going to, so it wont be like walking the streets at home. The Balinese people in general are wonderful, warm, gentle people, but like everywhere, there are a few exceptions to the rule. You also need to remember that selling their wares is their only means of putting food on the table, and yes, they are deperate.
I can't wait for October, my 9th trip to Bali, and have my 10th already booked for next March. I love the place and the people, and would live there if I could.
Go with an open mind, commonsense (re safety issues) and have a great time !
