The 20kg is per person and all that you are checking in (not carrying on) If there are two or more of you, as long as you check in together they have always added the limits together. Just put all the bags on the scales at once. The carry on lugguage is size limited (to fit in the overhead compartments and you are only SUPPOSED to carry on one bag plus a handbag etc no more than 7kg, but I havent had it weighed before. Garuda is more lenient and it can depend on how full the flight is. We take a large near empty suitcase and a soft sided bag that folds flat inside it. Also a small wheeled case to carry on, so if it is really heavy you dont have to carry it. I also put all my declarables on top in one bag for ease & make sure any timber items are sealed and beware some seashells are illegal to take out of the country. As what to take, cool & casual lightweight natural fibre clothes are best, walking shoes, togs buy sarongs there. I know a lot of people take a cask of wine, as wine is quite expensive there.
