I have found that there are several types of laquerwares - mostly differing from each other by the components of the resin. I have been given a piece from a Myanmar citizen. Usually many people pick up the Burmese (Myanmarese?) laquerware in Thailand (Chiang Mai or closer to the Mayanmar border). Other sources would be South China (cheaper???) and Japan (the most expensive). My belief is that the laquerware you bought in Bali might be originally created elsewhere and hence your high price (but I do not know this for FACT). Hope this helps.
