I have a Citibank debit card that I only use for holidays. I think it's a Mastercard these days. It has a linked account that I keep the majority of my money in, and transfer just before I want to use an ATM or pay for bigger charges with the card (such as hotel or large purchases). I always check ATMs before using them - but I do this at home too, since my local shopping mall is the only place I've ever had a card skimmed.
I take a couple of hundred dollars cash as a back up, but have never needed to exchange it. Been using exclusively ATMs and not money changers for at least 10 years now.
