I always take cash for living expenses etc. but always pay my hotel with a credit card (for backup reference).
I am a believer that the less you use your credit card the less change it has to be compromised.
When in Bali we usually leave our cash in hotel security boxes or in room safe and only take out what we think we are going to use for a few days and then exchange it into Rupiah.
My wife and I take our credit cards to use as a back up if needed and leave 1 in the safe and take 1 out with us ....it is important to be able to access your bank for another source of income if needed....always notify your bank that you will be in Bali.
We also have 2 accounts that can be accessed on separate pins....just a bit of extra security.
