I always travel with my own mask, snorkel, booties and fins.
So important to have a good mask, or as you already stated, know how to fit one.
If luggage allowances were more generous I would take my own BCD and wettie (suitable for whichever climate Im in) every time I travelled with the intent to dive. Nothing like familiarity.
