I personally dislike resorts and private villas but get those who do like them
Bali is not expensive unless you want it to be expensive in fact It seems not to have change much re cost for us in many years because of the cheap flights and exorbitant aussie cost of living.
There was a time when the biggest expense in bali was first time visitors happily paying $20 for a pair of $2 shorts or sarong! But now many enjoy paying $50+ for a $5 meal so they will continue to service those visitors who want to spend more than other think is needed.
