penalty for drug dealing in Indonesia, or the method of killing, or the justification, or not, the bottom line is that this has all been organised by politicians and government enforcement agencies, not the lovely balinese people we have come to know and respect for their peaceful way of life.
Do we remember after the Bali bombings their (sad) assumption that they must have done something awfully wrong to draw such bad karma for their country - not the condemnation we tourists gave to the terrorists who killed, and devastated the incomes of many hotel and shop workers supporting extended families back in their villages?
One of my Balinese friends posted on facebook yesterday that Life had been ended and the whole world was crying. They are not the ones demanding death penalties. They just want to live peacefully and raise their families, but I fear the backlash (a reduction in tourist numbers) may drop some of them beneath subsistence levels.
We will be going back this year.
