I have hip problems and we have a Tempur mattress at home which is an absolute God send. I went to Clark Rubber and bought a piece of high density foam which I cut in half. I put one piece in the bottom of my husbands suitcase and the other in mine. The down size is we have to take larger suitcases than we'd like and I am higher in the bed than him :-) I did see a lady at KP once who had an 'egg crate' foam mattress tucked under her arm. These days hotels often have mattress toppers available if you ask for one. I still take mine just in case.
