Just brought in one yesterday without any problems, albeit not on Virgin (on Singapore Airlines).
The idea with a medical letter is that it should state that the weight of the machine and accessories should not be included in the stated weight of the hand luggage but be carried free of charge. Of course it is good to have a certificate to also convince security in Bali on departure that it is medical equipment to be handled accordingly.
