Have flown Garuda several times and as far as basic service etc goes there was little difference between it and other airlines. I have flown the lot. Merpati, Sampati, Air Paradise, Cathay Pacific, Jet*, AA, and Garuda. Cathay would beat Garuda hands down.
Several years ago a mate in the travel business got me a free upgrade to BC. Yes a bit of extra comfort etc but is it really worth it on a short haul. As you say "If I Had the Brass" I would have to think hard on the short hop from Perth.
The point I think is that everyone thinks Garuda is the safest Airline in Asia. With all the crashes listed it obviously is not.
Remember BC hits the ground first.
